Overview

To display Software Version and Software Image in the Node Details resource in the Orion Web Console, the device must support the sysDescription OID  -  1.3.6.1.2.1.1.1, and provide the information.

See Management Information Base (MIB) for information about MIBs and OIDs.

Environment

  • NPM 11 and above

Detail

To provide information about the software operation system on a device, the Orion Platform products poll the OID sysDescription - 1.3.6.1.2.1.1.1. Orion Platform products  identify the information about Software Version and Software Image from the OID.

If a device sends the response for SysDescription in a different way than expected, and NPM is not able to parse Software Version and Image, you cannot see the Software Version and Image  information on the Node Details page.

To resolve the issue, create a custom device poller and specify the vendor-specific OIDs for Sofware Version/Image.

To verify that the device responds to the OID:

  1. Run the SNMP walk.
  2. Open the walk and search for the OID. This OID is usually the first one on the top of the file.
The following examples show what the information you find should look like:

    For Cisco Node

.1.3.6.1.2.1.1.1.0 = STRING: "Cisco Internetwork Operating System Software

IOS (tm) C2600 Software (C2600-I-M), Version 12.0(9), RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1) Copyright (c) 1986-2000 by cisco Systems, Inc.

    For Windows Node

    .1.3.6.1.2.1.1.1.0 = STRING: "Hardware: Intel64 Family 6 Model 58 Stepping 9 AT/AT COMPATIBLE - Software: Windows Version 6.1 (Build 7600 Multiprocessor Free)"

  3. If you do not find the OID and information in the walk, create a custom poller with the Device Studio.

Resolution

Create a custom poller for the Node Details technology, and specify the device OIDs that provide the Software Version and Image on the device.

To find out the OID specifying software information on your device, consult the vendor's documentation.

  1. In the Orion Web Console, click Settings > All Settings > Manage Pollers.
  2. Click Create New Poller, and select Node Details in Technology.
  3. Provide a name for the poller package, and specify a test node.devicepoller.PNG
  4. Provide the OIDs, and complete the wizard.

The information about software polled using the Device Studio poller will be included in the Node Details resource.

See Manage pollers with Device Studio for information about custom pollers.
