Use of WinPcap on the Orion Server

Table of contents

Updated: November 10, 2016

Overview

This article provides information about the use of WinPcap on the Orion Server.

Environment

  • NPM version 11 and later

Detail

When agent is installed for the first time or upgraded from previous version of Orion, it installs the following applications:

  • .NET Framework 4.5
  • Microsoft Visual C++ 2013 Redistributable (x86) - 12.0.30501
  • WinPcap 4.1.3
  • The .NET Framework and VC++ Redistributable are needed by all polling, WinPcap is needed by NetPath.

Agent installs these applications silently in the background.

Uninstalling WinPcap on the Orion server will affect the functionality of QoE and Netpath of Orion, to the point that it will not work at all.

The basic agent monitoring (Agent as polling method for node) should be fine since it does not use packet capture to get data about the node itself.

The WinPcap can be used when forwarding syslog messages. See "Forward Syslog Messages" in the NPM Admin Guide.
