Overview

The following error occurs when NPM is trying to connect to SQL.

Environment

  • NPM v10.x
  • NPM v11.x
  • NPM v12.x

Cause

This issue is caused by a connection problem from NPM to SQL. This could be due to SQL user not having right permissions on SolarwindsOrionDB or Firewall

Resolution

  1. Open Database Manager and click Add default server.
If the same error message appears, the connection to SQL needs to be fixed.
  2. Use telnet to verify if port 1433 is open.
  3. If it still does not connect, verify if there is something that is blocking the server from establishing a connection to the SQL server.

Resolution #2: Run the configuration wizard again and select all 3 choices, database/website/services and this should resolve the error.

Resolution #3: Verify SolarwindsOrionUser permission on SolarwindsOrionDB
