This article provides information on how to resolve the following error which occurs while opening the Report Writer:

Cannot connect to DATABASE NAME database

  • All Orion Platform  version
  • SQL Server installed locally

Report Writer uses TCP/IP and Named Pipes to connect to the SQL Server. By default, SQL Server only enables Shared Memory as a transport protocol. While installing Orion on the same server where SQL Server is installed, the Configuration Wizard creates dependencies on some services (i.e. Information Service, Job Engine, Collector), which allows utilization of Shared Memory. But standalone applications, like Report Write, do not have such dependency and fails while opening with the error above.

  1. Login with administrative privileges to the server.
  2. Open SQL Server Configuration Manager.
  3. Expand SQL Server Network Configuration.
  4. Select local instance of SQL Server.
  5. In right panel, right-click TCP/IP and select Enable.
  6. In right panel, right-click Named Pipes and select Enable.
  7. Restart SQL Server instance. -

To restart an instance of SQL Server

    1. In Registered Servers or Object Explorer, right-click the server instance you want to restart, and then click Restart.

A message box asks whether you are sure you want to restart SQL Server on the server instance you chose.

    2. Click Yes.

A green arrow on the icon next to the server name indicates that the server restarted successfully.
