Overview

This article addresses an issue when the NetGroup Packet Filter (NPF) does not start. The following message can be seen in the Windows Events:

The NetGroup Packet Filter Driver service failed to start

Environment

Orion Platform 2014 and later

Cause

Installation of NPF is incomplete.

Resolution

The NetGroup Packet Filter (NPF) is a driver installed by WinPcap which is part of the QoE/DPI package. On some system, installation might be blocked due to insufficient privileges of the account under which installation was performed. You can attempt re-installation of the package by following steps below:

  1. Download the installer and run the installation as an administrator (right click and select Run As Administrator). Make sure that prior to execution, the file is not blocked by OS (right click, select Permissions, Unblock if needed).
  2. Open CMD as an administrator and go to C:\ProgramData\Solarwinds\Installers.
  3. Run the following command to install the DPI module:
    msiexec /i DPIModuleInstaller.msi
  4. Run Configuration Wizard.
