The issue occurs when Native Pollers - OIDs that have been chosen for vendors or models fails to provide the correct information.

The issue occurs when Native Pollers - OIDs that have been chosen for vendors or models fails to provide the correct information.




There are two procedures to resolve the issue (using the Manage Pollers fetaure in NPM v11.0 and later versions):

Step 1: Finding the right OIDs to poll your device.

  1. Check Thwack or the Content Exchange - Thwack and the Content Exchange.
  2. Check the device documentation or vendor forums to see if there are any recommended OIDs to use to poll the device.
  3. Check with your vendors' support team to see what OID they would recommend on that device.
  4. Run an SNMPWalk against your device to view every OID it supports.

Step 2: Using Device Studio (Manage Pollers), to replace the native pollers with your new custom pollers. 

  1. In Device Studio, click Create New Poller.
  2. Fill in the details about this new poller.
  3. On thenext page, you will see a list of all required information for this Poller. For example, to poll CPU and Memory. Orion needs to know where to get details of the current CPU load, memory used, and free memory.
  4. For each of these details, you will need to define the data source. (Note: You need to define what OIDs Orion needs to poll to get accurate information from your device).
  5. Browse the MIB tree itself, testing OIDs agains your chosen device as you go. Alternatively, if you already know the OID you want to poll, enter it under Manually Define OID.
  6. Click Yes, the data source is reasonable.
  7. Once the wizard is complete, choose your new Poller from the list and select the Assign button. Select the node/s you need to assign this poller to, and run a scan against them. (This confirms that they will definitely support those new OIDs. If they pass the test with a match, you can enable your new poller, replacing the new poller.)

Note: Make sure you have a test device selected when you create the poller, as it will continuously test your OID choices against that device.
