Issue:

How does the SolarWinds Quality of Experience agent compute bandwidth consumption?

Resolution:

The SolarWinds Quality of Experience agent uses the following formula to compute bi-directional bandwidth consumption:

Total 2-way bandwidth bps = 2 x (3,000 + (100,000 / tp )) ,

where tp is the time poll interval, in seconds. The default value of tp is 300 seconds.

Example Calculations:

The total bandwidth (bps) for 10 packet analysis sensor agents, communicating in both directions, for one hour, where the time poll interval is the default, 300 seconds.

 
Total 2-way Bandwidth (bps) = 10 x (2 x (3000 + (100,000 / 300)))
  = 10 x 2 x 3,333 bps
  = 66,666 bps
  = 66.67 kbps
 
Total Data Throughput (B) = (Total Bandwidth bps) x (60 sec/min) x (Total Polling Time min) / (8 bits/byte)
  = (66,666 bps) x (60 sec/min) x (60 min) / (8 bits/byte)
  = 29,999,700 bytes
  = ~30 MB
