Overview

This article provides brief information and steps to resolve the issue when servers (physical or VM) do not reflect under Topology Connections when connected to a switch.

They also do not reflect when the network devices are polled and the endpoints are confirmed directly connected to the devices.

Environment

NPM version 11 or later

Cause

NPM, by default automatically filters out any node, whether servers or other endpoints that are directly connected to a switch device. The purpose of this is that the Topology Connections resource is built to provide network topology between network devices specifically, not necessarily what's attached to them as an endpoint.

However, this functionality can be changed. The Topology Connections resource builds off the SNMP polled results from the network devices, verifies if they are connected, then runs them through the topology calculation to see if it will be filtered out or not.

Resolution

To allow endpoints to be seen from network devices under Topology Connections, follow these steps:

  1. Go to the install directory for Orion at Program Files (x86)\SolarWinds\Orion.
  2. Edit the file named Calculation.cfg.
  3. Scroll down until you find this section, specifically highlighted in Green:
  4. Remove the section highlighted in Green so that section looks like this:
  5. Save the file.
  6. Force poll the node the interface is on.
  7. Go to Settings > Manage Nodes.
  8. On the tool bar above the list of nodes, click on More Actions, then click on Update Topology.

This will allow the calculation to allow in any nodes directly connected to the device, whether they are physical or virtual.
