Scheduled report using export to .xls shows as corrupted

Updated: September 28, 2016

Overview

This article describes the issue when after scheduling a report to send to excel format (.xls), you are unable to preview the report in your outlook client and opening the excel file does not work and advise you that the .xls attachment is corrupted.

Environment

  • All versions of Orion Core that send emails via a scheduled report using export to excel (.xls) format

Cause

This is due to an MS Excel Security option.

Resolution

  1. Open the MS Excel.
  2. Click File > Options.
  3. Select Trust Center and click Trust center settings.
  4. Click Protected view.

The options listed under Protected View maybe causing this behavior. Unchecking them all will verify that the problem is outside SolarWinds software.

You may restart Excel and try to open the broken Excel documents via outlook attachment. You may also try to upgrade to the latest version of MS Excel which may solve the issue.
