Overview

This article describes how to remove existing traps and Syslog messages from the Orion NPM database using either SQL Server Management Studio or Database Manager.

As of the release of SolarWinds Orion Platform version 2013.1, released with SolarWinds NPM 10.5, SolarWinds recommends the use of SQL Server Managment Studio to make changes to your SolarWinds database.

Environment

All NPM versions

Steps

SQL Server Management Studio

  1. Start > All Programs > Microsoft SQL Server > SQL Server Management Studio.
  2. Log in to your SolarWinds database using administrative credentials.
  3. Expand Databases > your SolarWinds Orion database > Tables.
  4. If you are also running Orion NCM, expand your Orion NCM database.
Note: The default Orion NCM database name is ConfigMgmt.
  5. Right-click Syslog, and then click Select Top 1000 Rows.
  6. If you want to delete all Syslog messages, traps, and trap variable bindings that are older than a designated date, clear the SELECT query and enter the following query using an appropriate date:
Delete from Syslog Where datetime <= '4/1/2010'
Delete from Traps Where datetime <= '4/1/2010'
Delete from TrapVarBinds where TrapID not in (select TrapID from Traps)
  7. If you want to delete all existing Syslog messages, traps, and trap variable bindings, use Truncate commands as follows:
    Truncate Table Syslog
    Truncate Table Traps
    Truncate Table TrapVarBinds
  8. Click Execute.

You can also raise the event threshold that triggers the out of space warning by increasing the CurrentValue for each of the following rows in the Settings table of your SolarWinds database:

  • SysLog-MaxRowCount (default: 1000000)
  • Traps-MaxRowCount (default: 1000000)
  • TrapVarbinds-MaxRowCount (default: 5000000)

Database Manager

  1. Start > All Programs > SolarWinds Orion > Advanced Features > Database Manager.
  2. If your SQL Server is not listed in the left pane, click Add default server.
  3. Expand your SQL instance > your Orion NPM database.
Note: The default Orion NPM database name is NetPerfMon.
  4. If you are also running Orion NCM, expand your Orion NCM database.
Note: The default Orion NCM database name is ConfigMgmt.
  5. Right-click Syslog, and then click Query Table.
  6. Clear the provided query and enter the following query to delete all Syslog messages, traps, and trap variable bindings that are older than a designated date:
Delete from Syslog Where datetime <= '4/1/2010'
Delete from Traps Where datetime <= '4/1/2010'
Delete from TrapVarBinds where TrapID not in (select TrapID from Traps)
  7. If you want to delete all existing Syslog messages, traps, and trap variable bindings, use Truncate commands as follows:
    Truncate Table Syslog
    Truncate Table Traps
    Truncate Table TrapVarBinds
