Updated June 8th, 2017

Overview

When trying to setup SNMPv3 on on ESXi host you will see the following meesage in Wireshark when filter this out for traffic over udp 161 for a specific host:

Data not conforming to RFC1910
[Expert Info (Warning/Protocol): Data not conforming to RFC1910]

Environment

  • NPM 11.5.3 +
  • ESXi 5.1

Cause

This issue occurs due to the boot and time values, which are part of the SNMPv3 protocol security feature, do not get updated properly.  The management application refuses to process responses if the boot and time values are incorrect. The SNMP agent on the ESXi refuses to process responses in such a situation.

Resolution

  1. Navigate to VMware site KB to get the device patched.
