SMTP email test fails for Exchange Server

Overview

When adding SMTP servers in the Orion Web Console settings, you are unable to send a test email to make sure that communication is established. 

 

Environment

All NPM versions

Cause 

On the Exchange server configuration, Anonymous access is not enabled. 

Resolution

  1. Run Wireshark with filter ip.addr == <IP> && tcp.port == 25.
  2. Check the packet data for authentication errors.
  3. Select Anonymous access to allow email authentication. 
  4. Check Microsoft Exchange documentation from Microsoft (© 2016 Microsoft, available at https://technet.microsoft.com/, obtained on December 14, 2016.) to locate the option based on version installed for Exchange.
