Overview

This article provides information on addressing the following error message that may appear in different Orion Platform log files:

COMException (0x80040213): The transport failed to connect to the server

Environment

All Orion Platform versions

Cause 

This error (exception) is thrown when the SMTP Server is configured to use authentication in the Orion Platform but the actual SMTP server does not require authentication.

Resolution

Disable authentication in the SMTP configuration:

  1. Log in to the Orion Web Console.
  2. Go to Settings > Alerts & Reports > Manage SMTP Settings.
  3. Select relevant SMTP server.
  4. Click Edit.
  5. Clear the This SMTP server requires authentication option
  6. Click Save.

If the error message continues to appear:

  1. Make sure there are no "spaces" in the SMTP Hostname or IP Address field.
  2. Verify that you have not mistyped the server name or IP address, or included extra spaces in:
  1. Troubleshoot basic network connectivity downstream from the SolarWinds server as this does not indicate any issues on the SolarWinds side.
