Running NPM or NCM installer: Error opening file for writing

Overview

The following error occurs when running NCM or NPM installer on the Orion server:

Error opening file for writing:

C:\Users\<Username>\AppData\Local\Temp\2\SWOrionSetup\Microsoft.Deploymeny.WindowsInstaller.dll

Click Abort to stop the installation,

Retry to try again, or

Ignore to skip this file.

Environment

  • All NPM versions
  • All NCM versions

Cause 

The error is caused by GPO or UAC permission or access issues to the %temp%\SWOrionSetup folder during installation.

Resolution

  1. Right-click the installer, and then select Unblock.
  2. Right-click the installer, and then select Troubleshoot compatibility.
  3. Select Troubleshoot program, and then select The program requires additional permissions.
  4. Click Next until you Finish.
  5. Right-click the installer, and then select Run as administrator.

The installation is now complete without any error message.
