Overview

Encountering packet loss on Orion, but not encountering any issues when using 'ping' command from the Operating System.

Environment

  • Orion Core

Cause

The standard OS ping is 32-byte in size.
In Orion, the default payload that we use is "SolarWinds Status Query", and will be about 23-byte in length.

Some network devices do not like this, and will tend to impact the packets.

Resolution

You can do the following to make the ping packet to 32-bytes by adding more characters by doing the following:

  1. Log in to Orion Web Console.
  2. Click Settings > Polling Settings.
  3. Locate "ICMP Data".
  4. Change the payload from: SolarWinds Status Query
    to: SolarWinds Status Query 12345678
  5. Click Submit.
