Orion menu bar is missing from NPM 12.0.1

Overview

The menu bar is missing from the Orion Web Console, where administration is no longer possible and occurs about once a week. After restarting the server, the menu bar is restored.

Environment

NPM 12.0.1

Cause 

This occurs when there is an error connecting to Business Layer Host. It may be unavailable due to high load or performance issues.

Resolution

Load the BusinessLayer modules in their own separate processes

Note: NPM v12.0 moved Config File Settings to a hidden page. Orion now stores these changes in Database. (Changes will now be respected after migration or upgrades)

  • Go to the Settings editor pages (hidden link for Centralized Settings UI). This can only be accessed using a URL:
    • {OrionWebsite}/Orion/Admin/AdvancedConfiguration/Global.aspx - leads to the Global tab
    • {OrionWebsite}/Orion/Admin/AdvancedConfiguration/ServerSpecific.aspx - leads to the Server-Specific tab
  • Open the hidden Global Settings Page.
    1. For example use the following with your own web servers name: http://YourServersName/Orion/Admin/AdvancedConfiguration/Global.aspx
    2. Find ForcePluginsInSeparateProcess under SolarWinds.BusinessLayerHost.BusinessLayerHostSettings
    3. Set ForcePluginsInSeparateProcess= 1.
