Orion Web Console is empty and there are DB connection string issues in the log

Overview

The Orion Web Console is empty and the following errors are found in the orionweb.log file (C:\Program Data\Solarwinds\Orion\logs\orionweb.log):

ERROR SolarWinds.Orion.Common.OrionConfiguration - Settings file 'SWNetPerfMon.DB' N/A - System.AggregateException: One or more errors occurred.
ERROR SolarWinds.Orion.Common.ConnectionStringProvider - File doesn't exists
ERROR SolarWinds.Orion.Common.ConnectionStringProvider - ConnectionString wasn't found in
ERROR SolarWinds.Orion.Common.OrionConfiguration - Settings file 'SWNetPerfMon.DB' N/A - System.AggregateException: One or more errors occurred.

To check the error:

  1. Download sysinternals - Procmon.
  2. Use the Path filter, and then enter swnetperfmon.db.
  3. Open the empty Orion Web Console.
  4. Check for any access denied errors.

Proceed with the resolution below if there are access denied errors for network service.

Cause 

This is an environmental issue related to group policy, hardening, and restrictive rules within the security of the product.

Resolution

Note: This is a workaround. You are expected to investigate your own environment issues. SolarWinds uses network service by default.

  1. Open Inetmgr.
  2. Right-click on the Solarwinds Orion application pool.
  3. Click Advanced Settings.
  4. Under Identity, change the Network Service to Local system.
  5. Open a command prompt as an administrator.
  6. Enter IISRESET.
  7. Open C:\Program Files (x86)\SolarWinds\Orion\StopNetPerfMon.exe.
  8. Restart all Orion services.
