Overview

This article describes how to troubleshoot an issue with SolarWinds Network Performance Manager (NPM) where 99% of the allocated space on the Orion Database Server (SQL server) is occupied with syslog messages.

See this Microsoft TechNet KB article (© 2017 Microsoft, available at https://support.microsoft.com/>, obtained on April 5, 2016.) for additional details.

Environment

All NPM versions

Steps

  1. Change the database recovery model from Full to Simple.
  2. Recover the Orion Database Server (SQL Server) .LDF log file file (if it grows out of control).
  3. Truncate the Syslog table.
  4. Release the unused space for the SQL Server database (.mdf) file.

Change the database recovery model from Full to Simple

  1. Open SQL Server Enterprise Manager or SQL Server Management Studio.
  2. Expand the server group.
  3. Expand your database server.
  4. Expand Databases.
  5. Right-click the NetPerfMon database and select Options.
  6. In the Model list, click Simple.
  7. Save your changes.

Recover the Orion Database Server (SQL Server) .LDF log file

  1. Stop all Orion services.
  2. Open SQL Server Management Studio.
  3. Connect to your Orion Database Server (SQL Server).
  4. Right-click your Orion database and select All Tasks > Shrink > Files.
  5. Set the File Type to Log.

Note: Filegroup is not an available option.

  6. Right click the Orion Database and select All Tasks > Shrink > Reorganize pages before releasing the unused space.
  7. Set the Shrink File value to 0 MB, then click OK.

Note: This step may require several minutes to complete for each GB.

  8. Restart all Orion services

The transaction log file size is reduced.

Truncate the Orion Database Server table

Note: This procedure clears all Syslogs messages to recover the used storage space and cannot be reversed.

  1. In SQL Management Studio, right-click the SolarWinds Orion database and select New Query.
  2. Execute the following query:
    Truncate table [dbo].[Syslog]

Release the unused space for the SQL Server database (.MDF) file

  1. Stop all Orion services.
  2. In the SQL Server Management Studio, connect to your Orion (Database) SQL Server.
  3. Right click the Orion Database and select All Tasks > Shrink > Files.
  4. Set the File Type to Data and the Filegroup to Primary.
  5. Right click the Orion Database and select All Tasks > Shrink > Reorganize pages before releasing unused space.
  6. Set the Shrink File to a value just above the minimum shown on the right, and click OK.

Note: This step may take several minutes to completed for each GB of storage.

  7. Restart all Orion services

The main database size is reduced.

  8. Close SQL Server Management Studio.
