NetPath probe not reporting results

Overview

The NetPath probe does not seem to be reporting results.

No NetPath graph was generated after deploying a NetPath remote agent for three or more probing intervals. The "First poll not yet complete" message did not change after refreshing the NetPath Services page.

  • NPM 12.0 and later

Resolution

Step 1: Check if the NetPath remote agent installed successfully

  1. From the Orion Web Console, click Settings > All Settings > Manage Agents.
  2. Check the status of the NetPath remote agent.
  3. If the installation succeeded, that status reads "Agent is running, Connected." If not, the status reads "Installation in progress."

Did the agent install successfully?

Step 2: Check if the NetPath agent has a missing component

  1. Open an RDP session to the NetPath agent computer.
  2. From the Windows Control Panel, open Program and Features.
  3. Check if the following items are installed:

Is a component missing?

  • Yes: Download and install the missing component, and then restart the SolarWinds Agent service.
  • No: Go to Step 3.

Step 3: Check if the NetPath agent plug-in installed successfully

  1. From the Orion Web Console, click Settings > All Settings > Manage Agents.
  2. Select the NetPath remote agent, and click More Actions > View installed plug-ins report.
  3. Check if the NetPath plug-in is installed and has a green status.

Did the plug-in install sucessfully?

  • Yes: Go to Step 4.
  • No: Reinstall the NetPath plugin:
    1. Click My Dashboards > Network > NetPath Services.
    2. Locate the grey path with the issue.
    3. Click the Delete to the right of the service to remove it.
    4. Add a new probe with the same IP address and credentials that you previously used. It is important that the IP address matches the agent. This skips verification of credentials, and just deploys the NetPath plug-in if it is missing.
    5. Wait for one polling interval to get a green status, or verify in the Manage Agents view.

Step 4: Check if WinPcap is installed properly

  1. From the Windows Control Panel, open Program and Features.
  2. Check if WinPcap is installed.
  3. Run cmd from the Windows Start Menu as administrator.
  4. Run sc query npf from the command prompt.
  5. Check if the results show that the NPF service exists and is in a Running state.

Is WinPcap installed properly?

  • Yes: Submit a ticket to technical support.
  • No: Reinstall WinPcap:
    1. On the main Orion server, go to C:\ProgramData\Solarwinds\Installers\WinPcapSilent\ for the WinPcap installer.
    2. If WinPcap is already installed on the NetPath probe and not functioning properly, uninstall WinPcap from Program and Features in the Windows Control Panel.
    3. Run a command prompt as administrator, and enter sc query npf.
      1. If the query result shows "the specified service does not exist," skip to the next step.
      2. If the query result shows that the NPF service exists, reboot the computer.
    4. Run the WinPcapSilent installer with administrator rights.
