NetPath polling issues when Symantec Endpoint Protection is enabled on a probe computer

Updated: September 6, 2017

Overview

NetPath fails to poll a path, but the endpoint of the path is reachable from the NetPath probe.

Environment

  • NetPath
  • Symantec Endpoint Protection installed and enabled on the probe computer

Cause

Symantec Endpoint Protection blocks the NetPath traffic to the endpoint. To verify it, check the Traffic Log of the Symantec Endpoint Protection.

Resolution

  1. Add a firewall rule to allow NetPath traffic, especially for inbound ICMP type 11 traffic. See Files and directories to exclude from antivirus scanning.
  2. If Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) rules apply, SolarWinds recommends you to add NetPath Probe host(s) in the exclusion list.

NetPath polls the path without issues.
