NPM accessing multiple nodes through a single IP addreess

Table of contents

Updated June 7th, 2016

Overview

Some users have an environment where remote devices are accessed via a single IP address behind a router.

Environment

All NPM versions

Detail

NPM monitors access each node via a unique IP address. If a remote device exists behind a router, then it is necessary to use a NAT (Network Address Translation) setup with a one-to-one translation to convert the internal IP addresses to a static address that is reachable from outside the network. This will allow NPM to monitor the node with ICMP and SNMP.

Alternatively it may be possible to setup a remote additional Poller as discussed in the Scalability Engine Guidelines.
