Congratulations on your purchase of SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor (NPM). SolarWinds NPM provides a comprehensive fault and performance monitoring platform that allows you to collect and view availability and both real-time and historical statistics directly from your web browser. While monitoring, collecting, and analyzing data from routers, switches, firewalls, servers, and any other SNMP- or WMI-enabled devices, SolarWinds NPM successfully offers a simple-to-use, scalable network monitoring solution for IT professionals managing any size network.

If you have applied Service Packs or Hotfixes to your product, they were delivered with readme.txt files. These files contain fixes that supersede the information found in the Release Notes.

These release notes provide additional guidance for SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor (NPM) 11.5.

New SolarWinds NPM Features and Improvements

This release of SolarWinds NPM includes the following features:

Wireless Heat Maps

  • Build wireless heat maps for Cisco wireless controllers and display them in the Orion Web Console.
  • Visualize your signal coverage to identify poor coverage areas.
  • Display wireless clients directly on the map to discover hotspots and help troubleshooting.

Web-based Alerting Engine

Note: If you have SAM installed on the same computer as NPM, use the desktop-based Advanced Alert Manager or Basic Alert Manager until you install SAM v6.2

  • Alerts created using the desktop-based alerting engine are automatically migrated to the web-based alerting engine.
  • Create and manage alerts using new, web-based condition builder.
  • Combine multiple object types in the same alert.
  • Automatically suppress alerts from dependent objects and focus on the root cause.
  • Use more extensible variables in alerts.

AppStack Environment Resource

  • Gain in-depth perspective through the entire environment to help identify the root cause of performance and availability issues.

  • AppStack is also available as a feature in the following software versions. If you own two or more of the listed products, AppStack will not function properly unless each version of the software is upgraded to the versions listed:
    • Storage Resource Monitor 6.0
    • Integrated Virtual Infrastructure Monitor 2.0
    • Server & Application Monitor 6.2
    • Web Performance Monitor 2.2
  • Even if you are running an older version of any above mentioned product, objects monitored in it will be displayed in AppStack.

Support for Further Wireless Controllers

  • NPM now supports the following wireless controllers: HP WX Series, Netgear WC7520 Series, Siemens HiPath C-4110/C-2400, and Juniper WLC880.

Capacity Forecasting

  • Identify future capacity issues before they affect your users.

Hardware Health Monitoring Improvements

  • Customize thresholds for being alerted on hardware health issues.
  • Change the MIB used for polling hardware health sensors on your Cisco devices.
  • Individually select which hardware health sensor you want to enable on a node.

Manage Poller Improvements

  • Configure NPM to automatically identify new or unknown objects in your environment based on SysOID.
  • Populate CPU and RAM fields using custom OIDs.

Interface Management Improvements

  • Monitor interface status and display it on a timeline.
  • Detect interface duplex mismatches throughout your environment.

Automatic Geolocation on WorldMaps

  • Based on the SNMP location field, NPM automatically places nodes on the World Map resource.

Mandatory Custom Properties

  • Flag Custom Properties as mandatory to avoid provisioning oversight.

  • Automatically calculate node-to-node dependencies based on topology connections.

Orion Global Search

Important Disclaimer: As we say with statements in our What We Are Working On posts, this technical preview is a demonstration of potential future capabilities and is not a commitment to delivering this feature in the next (or potentially any) release of NPM or as a standalone product. We appreciate your feedback and will take it into account when making decisions on whether, when, and how to implement the demonstrated features. While we are committed to providing guidance for this technical preview in production environments, it is not considered officially released and supported as a part of NPM product maintenance, and our ultimate advice may simply be to remove the technical preview.

  • Search through traps, syslogs, alerts, events, and monitored objects directly in the Orion Web Console. The Global Search is available as a technical preview.

The following security vulnerabilities were addressed by SolarWinds:

  • CVE-2014-0895: IBM SPSS SamplePower "vsflex8l" ActiveX Control ComboList Property Code Execution Vulnerability.
  • CVE-2014-9566: SQL injection vulnerability.

Known SolarWinds NPM Issues

This version of SolarWinds NPM includes the following known issues:

Area Description
Active Directory The Email a Web Page alert action does not function as designed for users who are logged in to the web console using an Active Directory account or group. This is a known issue that may be addressed in a future release.

If you are using an Active Directory account for authentication into the web console, you may experience a session timeout when attempting to execute an Email a web page alert action.
To resolve this issue, wait for the session timeout to expire (this may take upwards of 20 minutes), and then restart the Alerting Engine service.

If you upgrade to NPM 11.5 on a server with NPM and SAM, some SAM-specific alerts might not be converted correctly. To resolve the issue, upgrade to SAM 6.2.

Auditing The default Auditing Trails Retention setting value (365 days) may result in an excessively large auditing table and significant database performance issues.
To resolve this issue, log in to the web console as an administrator, click Settings > Polling Settings, and then change the default Auditing Trails Retention value.
Note: You may also reduce the size of the auditing table in your database by opting to audit fewer event types.
Charts On upgrade to the new format, old format charts with the setting Time period for Chart set to Last 2 Hours may have the configured time period changed.
To resolve this issue, reconfigure the Time period for Chart setting to Last 2 Hours for all affected charts.
Charts that are included in new web console reports are not currently available for export to .XLS. This capability is expected in a future release.
Custom Properties Custom property export to .XLS fails when a Definition column is included. For more information, see this article.
Discovery Due to an issue with its SNMP agent, KYOCERA MITA Printing Systems (OID: may not be recognized correctly.
ESX Monitoring When adding or updating an ESX server as a monitored node, you may need to refresh the view before successfully changing the provided IP address.
FIPS SolarWinds installations on Windows server 2008 R2 and Windows 7 require a Microsoft hotfix to realize the FIPS-compatibility features of SolarWinds products. For more information about this required Microsoft hotfix, visit Microsoft support pages.
Groups The Add New Group button is not available on the Manage Groups of the web console when it is viewed using Google Chrome browser with the AdBlock plugin.
Interface Indices Interface indices are maintained in both the Interfaces table and the NPM_Routing table of the SolarWinds database. Because these tables are polled on different polling intervals, the same interface may have different indices in each table as interfaces are remapped on independent polling intervals.
IPv6 For installations of SolarWinds NPM on Windows Server 2008 R2, if Link Local IPv6 addressing is enabled, only IPv4 addresses may be obtained. For more information, see this article.
NTA Integration Settings for resources specific to NetFlow Traffic Analyzer (NTA) are not available for editing when NTA resources are included in new web console reports.
Network Atlas Under certain specific conditions, Network Atlas may fail to complete file synchronization with the SolarWinds database. This failure has been linked to Network Atlas users who have insufficient permissions to access the Network Atlas synchronization folder. Confirm that the user logged in to Network Atlas is able to access the Network Atlas synchronization folder.
  • Non-Cisco nodes may not display operating system versions in Node Details resources.
  • Nodes are not assigned individual pollers if a discovery profile that was created before upgrade is used.
Polling Engines In environments using multiple polling engines, it is not currently possible to directly select an object's polling engine as a grouping criterion ("GroupBy") for custom resources and reports. It is, however, possible to use the Dynamic Query Builder in Advanced Mode to create conditions and filters based on PollingEngineID. Direct grouping by polling engine is expected to be available in a future release.
Quality of Experience
  • As a general rule of thumb, for up to 1 Gbps of traffic, 2 CPU cores, at minimum, are required, and an additional 1 CPU core and 1 GB RAM are required for every 100 Mbps of traffic. Accordingly, for example, you should use:
    • 3 CPU cores + 1 GB RAM to effectively process 100 Mbps of traffic
    • 7 CPU cores + 5 GB RAM to effectively process 500 Mbps of traffic.
    • 11 CPU cores + 9 GB RAM to effectively process 900 Mbps of traffic.
  • In selected locations in the web console, Transactions per Minute are displayed with ms as units. This condition may be corrected in a future release.
  • Sorting by title is not currently available for Interface Availability reports.
  • SolarWinds Orion EOC reports must not have the same name as existing NPM reports.
  • Report logos are not displayed correctly when the report is created in a web console running on Internet Explorer 7.
  • Charts that are included in new web console reports are not currently available for export to .XLS. This capability is expected in a future release.
  • When using SWQL to build a custom report, ORDER BY conditions are not respected. Data may be sorted from the Edit Table view for the affected report.
Routing Data OSPF/BGP neighbor status is not currently supported for monitored IPv6 nodes.
Security Using a Password as a Key is not available for SHA1 authentication. As SHA1 authentication is the only FIPS-compatible method, the Password as a Key option is not available for FIPS-enabled environments.
SolarWinds Toolset Integration The SolarWinds Toolset Integration for the Orion Web Console is unable to install automatically on Windows Server 2008 R2 due to an Internet Explorer version 8 (IE8) security feature. As a result, whenever the web console opens a view containing resources that can use the Toolset integration, a warning dialog is displayed. If you want to install the Toolset integration, click More Options, and then click Always Install. If you do not want to install the Toolset integration, click More Options, and then click Never Install.
  • Maps that were generated in previous versions of SolarWinds NPM may initially show links as red, due to the new interactive map settings.
  • Initial topology polling and calculations may require significant amounts of time for databases with more than 100,000 records.
Views Views by Device type keep switching to wireless access point view for Cisco devices.
Virtualization The Virtualization link on the Home menu bar is displayed for all users if a SolarWinds installation uses the default web console menu bar, even if account limitations intended to prevent access to the virtualization tab apply.
