This webinar will focus on use cases for HR, Facilities and Accounting.

Having a unified ticketing and asset management system for all the departments in your company can provide end-users with a seamless experience and make things easier for your IT team. Yet, with different business tasks and objectives, many departments don’t fully understand the capabilities of Web Help Desk and how the software can be customized for effective use in their departments.

This topic provides an example how you can create an alert that triggers when the toner level on your printer reaches 20 percent or lower.

The alert triggers when the custom node poller BlackTonerLevel assigned to the node Printer has a value of 20 or below. The UnDP BlackPollerLevel polls values from 0 to 100 and represents the level of remaining toner.

In this example, the BlackTonerLevel UnDP is enabled only for the node Printer.

  1. Log in to the Orion Web Console as an administrator.
  2. Click Settings > All Settings in teh menu bar.
  3. Click Manage Alerts in the Alerts & Reports grouping.
  4. Click Add New Alert.
  5. Enter the alert name and properties.
  6. On Trigger Condition, specify when the alert should trigger.
  7. On Reset Condition, select Reset when trigger condition is no longer true, and click Next.
  8. On Time of Day, select Alert is always enabled.
  9. On Trigger Action, define what happens when the alert triggers.
  10. Review the alert, and click Submit.

When you complete the steps, the alert is created and enabled. You will be alerted whenever the toner level on your printer is 20% or less, as defined on Trigger Condition (step 6).

See Use alerts to monitor your environment and Create new alerts for more information.

Specify when the alert triggers

This section describes how to specify that the alert triggers alert triggers when the custom node poller BlackTonerLevel assigned to the node Printer has the value 20 or less.

  1. On Trigger Condition, set the I want to alert on drop down to Custom Node Poller.

This depends on the type of Universal Device Poller (UnDP) you want to alert on. Other options relevant for UnDP are Custom Interface Poller or Table Poller Current Status.

  2. Select All objects in my environment as the scope of your alert.

The UnDP alert triggers for items this UnDP is applied to. In this example, it is only the Printer node. If there were more nodes, specify them here.

  3. Define the UnDP:
    1. Click Select Field in the drop-down list next to Custom Node Poller and then select Browse all Fields.
    2. Select Custom Poller in the Custom Node Poller tree, and then select Unique Name.

    3. Click Select to confirm your selection.
    4. Select the Is equal to condition in the third drop-down list.
    5. Enter BlackTonnerLevel into the fourth field in the row.

Press the down arrow on your keyboard to display all available values.

  4. Click the plus icon, and select Add single value comparison.
  5. Define the UnDP poller status that should trigger the alert.
    1. Click Select Field in the drop-down list next to Custom Node Poller, and then select Browse all Fields.
    2. Select Custom Poller Current Status in the Custom Node Poller tree, and then select Current Numeric Value in the right-hand pane.
    3. Click Select.
    4. Select the Is less than equal to condition in the third drop-down list.
    5. Enter 20 into the fourth field in the row.

If the alert should trigger only when BlackTonerLevel has a value 20 or less for a certain amount of time, specify how long the toner level must be lower than 20% for the alert to trigger. This option prevents false positive alerts when the condition occurs briefly or just once, but it introduces a delay before the alert triggers. For more information, see Set trigger conditions.

You have specified that the alert will trigger when the BlackTonerLevel on the Printer node has a value 20 or less. Click Next to specify what must happen for the alert to be removed from the active alerts list.
