NPM 12.0 feature: SwitchStack monitoring

In previous versions of NPM, if you monitored a Cisco® SwitchStack® , you only had visibility into the master switch on the stack. With NPM 12.0, you can:

  • See every switch in the stack, and the metrics for each switch in the new Switch Stack subview.
  • Monitor the health of the data stack and power stack rings, and use topology maps to discover breaks and loss of redundancy.
  • Identify and track the stack master and backup stack master.

Additional configuration is not required.

*Note: This functionality applies to Cisco devices only. Other vendors are not currently supported.

Troubleshoot a temperature issue

If there are alerts for your switch stack node – like these alerts seen on the Node Details Summary subview - you can easily identify the switch experiencing the issue. In this example, there is an alert for the temperature sensors for both Switch 1 and Switch 2.

You can get more information about the problem in the Current Hardware Health resource located on the Network subview. The hardware health view shows the status for all switches in the stack including fans, temperature, and power sensors.

In this example, the temperature on Switch 1 Sensor 2 is 39.38 F. There’s also a problem with the temperature on Switch 2.

To address the temperature issues:

  1. Locate the switch serial number in the Switch Stack Members resource on the Switch Stack subview.

    This resource provides serial numbers and additional details for all switches in this stack.

  2. Use the serial number to check your switch in the data center.

    Because multiple switches in your stack are experiencing temperature issues, you might want to check your hot/cold aisles to ensure they are functioning correctly.

Troubleshoot a connection problem

Switch stack monitoring provides topology displays and in-depth monitoring for data and power rings. The topologies display the connection status of all switches in the rings.

If there are problems with data or power connections, you’ll receive an alert.

  1. Navigate to the Switch Stack subview and review the Stack Data Ring and Stack Power Ring resources.

    In this example, there’s a problem with the connection between Switch 4 and Switch 5.

  2. Use the serial numbers to Identify the switches that have a connection problem.
  3. Ensure the cable is plugged in and both ends are fully seated.

    If the problem continues, you can replace the cable and check the status.

Alerts

Switch stacks have the following new alerts:

  • Switch Stack Power Redundancy Lost (enabled by default)
  • Switch Stack Data Ring Broken (enabled by default)
  • Switch Stack Member Number Changed
  • Switch Stack Master Changed
