Manually edit the device vendor information in NPM

Overview

This article describes how to manually edit the vendor field of a device to prevent it from displaying as Unknown when the devices are group by vendor in the Web Console.

Environment

NPM 9.1 and later

Steps

  1. Click Start > All Programs > SolarWinds Orion > Grouping and Access Control > Custom Property Editor.
  2. Click Add Custom Property.
  3. Select Build a Custom Property from scratch.
  4. Select Nodes in the Add Property to field.
  5. Provide an appropriate Property Name. For example, DeviceVendor.
  6. Select Text as the Property Type.
  7. Provide an appropriate Max Text Length. For example, 30.
  8. Click OK, and then close the Custom Property Editor.
  9. Click Start > All Programs > SolarWinds Orion > Orion Web Console.
  10. Click Admin in the Views toolbar, and then click Manage Nodes in the Node Management grouping.
  11. Select an appropriate criterion in the Group by: field.
  12. For each vendor of devices on your network, complete the following procedure:
    1. Select all the nodes of a single vendor, and then click Edit Properties.
    2. In the Custom Properties area, select the property name you have provided. For example, select DeviceVendor.
    3. c. In the selected property field, provide the appropriate vendor name, and then click Submit.

After assigning appropriate values, you should be able to sort and group by vendor using for your new vendor property.
