Use CAC web authentication with Server 2008

This article provides brief information and steps to access the Orion Web Console in secured locations. 


All NPM versions


Enable CAC authentication in Windows Server 2008 IIS 7:


I. Configure the Orion database to allow SSL:

1. Log on to your Orion server using an account with administrative rights.
2. Click Start > All Programs > SolarWinds Orion > Advanced Features > Orion Service Manager.
3. Click Shutdown Everything.
Note: It may take a few minutes to stop all services.
4. Click Start > All Programs > SolarWinds Orion > Advanced Features > Database Manager.
5. If your Orion database is not listed in the left pane, complete the following steps:
    a. Click Add Server.
    b. Using the format Server/Instance, select or provide the SQL Server instance you are using as your Orion         database.
    c. Select the appropriate login method, providing credentials as required, and then click Connect to Database Server.

6. Expand your Orion database in the left pane.
7. Right-click the Websites table, and then click Query Table.
8. Replace the default query with the following query:
         UPDATE dbo.Websites
    SET SSLEnabled=1
    WHERE WebsiteID=1

9. Click Refresh.
Click Start > All Programs > SolarWinds Orion > Advanced Features > Orion Service Manager.
11. Click Start Everything.

II. Configure the Orion website:


1. In Administrative Tools open Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager 7 (Internet Service Manager).

2. Expand the Sites folder to SolarWinds NetPerfMon.

3. In the middle section for IIS, double click the Authentication icon.

4. Disable Anonymous Authentication.

5. Disable Forms Authentication.

Note: If your environment requires forms authentication, attempt these configuration changes with forms authentication enabled. 

6.  Enable Windows Authentication.

7.  Click the back button on the top of the screen to return to the SolarWinds NetPerfMon Home view.

8. Click Bindings in the right pane of the window.

9. Click New or Add.

10. Select https as the site binding type.

11. Use port 443.

12. Select SolarWinds-Orion as your SSL certificate.

13. Click OK, and then click close.



III. Set client side certificates:

1. Click SSL or SSL Settings.

2. Click Require SSL.

3. Click 128 bit.

4. Click Required under Client Certificates.

5. In Internet Explorer, click Tools > Internet Options, and then add the Orion web site to the Local Intranet and Trusted Sites.

6. Set browser to Orion HTTPS target.

7. Use https://IOrionServerName/Orion/Login.aspx to navigate to the Orion SSL website.
