Upgrade to NPM 12 from NPM 11.5 and earlier

Updated January 2, 2019

Overview

This article describes how to upgrade from NPM 11.5 and earlier to NPM 12 and later.

About the upgrade

If you are upgrading from NPM 11.5 and earlier to NPM 12 or later, SolarWinds recommends installing a new NPM installation on your Orion Platform server.

You can download and install the latest NPM version from the Customer Portal. After you deactivate your previous version, you can apply your license to the new NPM installation.

If you are using an END OF LIFE version in your Orion Platform, see the additional steps in Currently supported software versions

Environment

  • NPM 11.5 and earlier

Detail

SolarWinds provides a 30-day, full-feature evaluation license. Use this license when installing NPM 12.x, and use the evaluation period to reference your 11.5 or earlier installation. After you deactivate your previous installation, you can activate your NPM 12.x installation.

After NPM 12.1, future releases will no longer support Microsoft Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2, and Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2. NPM 12.1 currently supports these versions. After NPM 12.3, future releases will no longer support Windows Server 2012 or Windows Server 2012 R2. SolarWinds recommends that you upgrade to Windows Server 2016 or later at your earliest convenience and SQL Server 2014 or later, with upgrade to SQL Server 2016 or later being preferred. For more information, see the End of support notices.
For additional information, see the NPM Upgrade Guide.

The following sections describe on how to install, deactivate, and activate NPM.

Download and install NPM 12

Because the system requirements changed between earlier NPM versions and NPM 12, SolarWinds recommends installing NPM on a new server.

  1. Log in to the Customer Portal.
  2. Click Downloads > Download Product.
  3. Click the Products drop-down menu and select Network Performance Monitor (NPM).
  4. Under Latest Release Downloads, select and download NPM 12.
  5. Run the NPM 12 installer.
  6. When prompted, select the Evaluation license.

Use the 30-day evaluation license included with the NPM 12 installation to use both installations concurrently for the evaluation period.

See this article for details about the improved NPM 12 installer. Also see the release notes for details about the release.

If you experience issues deactivating or reactivating your license, contact Customer Service. SolarWinds personnel can deactivate your previous NPM 11.5 or earlier version.
