Trap Rule to discard trap message does not work

A Trap Rule to discard trap messages was created and is it expected that there will no longer be emails for SNMP traps but the rule not does work.

All NPM versions

  • The order of the trap rules could be incorrect. Trap rule to Send an E-Mail / Page goes first before the trap rule to Discard Trap Message.
  • Although the trap rule to Discard Trap Message goes first, an Action to Stop Processing Trap Rules has not been added. Thus, it will continue processing the remaining trap rules until it reaches another trap rule to Send an E-Mail / Page. In this case you will notice Marked for Discard in the email body.

  1. On the Orion server, open the Trap Viewer tool (Start Menu > Programs > SolarWinds Orion > Syslog and SNMP Traps).
  2. On the top menu, click View > Alerts/Filter Rules ...
  3. On the Alerts / Filter Rules tab, use Move Up or Move down buttons to correct the order of Trap Rules. Discard Trap Message rules should be on top while Send an E-Mail / Page rules should be at the bottom.
  4. Edit all Discard Trap Message rules by selecting each rule then clicking Edit button.
  5. On the Alert Actions tab, click Add Action.
  6. Select Stop Processing Trap Rules, then click OK.
  7. Click OK again.
  8. Perform steps 4 to 7 to all other Discard Trap Message rules.
  9. There should be no longer any email sent for these SNMP traps.
