A node is showing as down but you can ping the same node successfully from the NPM Server

Updated August 9th, 2017

Overview

A node is showing as down, but you can ping the same node successfully from the NPM Server.

Environment

NPM, all versions

Cause

This can occur because the Default Polling for status has been changed from ICMP to SNMP. If polling the node via SNMP is unsuccessful, that is, the Device is rejecting Orion's SNMP requests because of security settings, then the node is marked as down.

Resolution

Resolve the issue by doing either of the following:

  • Resolve the SNMP connection issue. (See: SolarWinds SNMP Walk tool)
  • Delete & re-add the node (This will cause you to lose historical data)

Refer to the polling methods used in Orion in the article Polling methods used by Orion.

If this does not resolve the issue, you may want to check the NIC priority or check if a second, third or further NIC has been enabled.  In some cases, highly customized environments with redundant or failover network cards can route via different paths or through firewalls that may be blocking SNMP.
