Testing WMI Connectivity

This article provides steps to use the Microsoft Windows Management Instrumentation Tester tool to check WMI connectivity with monitored nodes, applications and services.  


Do the following on your WMI tool:

• Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) to be enabled and functioning properly.

• The remote server to be accessible through an RPC connection in order to run the WMI queries.

Testing WMI Connectivity

Complete the following task to ensure your Orion server supports WMI connections to target computers. WMI connectivity is required to enable and successfully use Windows service monitors and WMI process monitors. 


1. Log in to the Orion server as an administrator. 

2. Click Start > Run, type wbemtest.exe and then click OK. 

3. Click Connect on the Windows Management Instrumentation Tester window.

4. Enter \\Target_Primary_IP_Address\root\cimv2 in the Namespace field.

5. Replace Target_Primary_IP_Address in the above example with the actual Hostname or Primary IP Address of the target remote server. 

6. Enter a username in the User field, the password in the Password field, and NTLMDOMAIN:NameOfDomain in the Authority field. Replace NameOfDomain with the domain of the user account specified in the User field.

Note: User credentials are for accessing the remote computer and must have access to that remote computer. This may require you to enable remote procedure call (RPC) protocol on the remote computer.

7. Click Connect.

8. Click Enum Classes. 

9. Select the Recursive without entering a superclass name, and then click OK. 

10. The Windows Management Instrumentation Tester generates a list of classes. If the list does not appear, see the Troubleshooting WMI Connectivity link from Microsoft at end of this article for more information.

11. Click the Close button, and then click Exit. 


Troubleshooting WMI Connectivity 

The Windows Management Instrumentation Tester tool is provided by Microsoft to test WMI connectivity on a system. The wbemtest.exe file is installed in the WBEM directory of your Windows system folder.
