Test Failed error when adding a Windows Server node to NPM using the WMI polling method

Updated December 12, 2018

Overview

When you add a Windows Server node for monitoring in SolarWinds NPM and click Test, the WMI test may fail if the account does not have the permissions required by the Orion Platform.

Environment

  • Orion Platform
  • All NPM versions

Cause

The user account is not an administrator of the target server. This issue can occur in a secure environment.

Resolution

  1. Ensure that the account used for WMI polling has administrator privileges on the target server. Only accounts with administrator rights have the necessary permissions to access the target server's WMI services.
  2. If the administrator account is a domain member, specify both the user name and the domain in the Microsoft syntax. For example:
    DOMAIN\Administrator

See How to create a non-administrator user for SAM polling for details about using a non-administrator account for polling.

Workaround

If you are restricted from adding a Windows server to monitoring in a secure environment, switch monitoring to the agent polling method. See Deploy the agent manually to a Windows computer for details.
