Slow website performance with a high percentage of 'Other Time' in Hubble

Overview

 

If SolarWinds Support directed you to use a troubleshooting tool called Hubble, you may notice that the Other Time value is unusually high. The Other Time value is the remaining load time after database and Business Layer requests are complete. This includes SWIS, IIS and .Net Caches, and .Net object creation time.

There are several methods you can try to speed up the Orion Web Console website, as described in this article. Each item may or may not be applicable, but none of them will have a negative impact.

Environment

  • Orion Core all versions

Steps

I. Try this to reduce “Other Time” on their site - delete the .NET cache:

  1. Stop the IIS service, generally named World Wide Web Publishing Service.
  2. Navigate to C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319\Temporary ASP.NET Files\root.
  3. Delete everything in this directory (.Net cache).
  4. Navigate to C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v4.0.30319\Temporary ASP.NET Files\root.
  5. Delete everything in this directory (.Net cache).
  6. Restart the IIS service.
  7. Restart all SolarWinds services via Orion Service manager.
  8. Wait 15 minutes for system to settle.
  9. Load some pages on your website and see if they load faster

 

After completing these steps, run the Configuration wizard. When launched, select Website, and let the wizard complete without skipping website optimization.

II. If the above doesn't resolve the issue, or if you see a lot of long running SWIS queries, this can be an indication of problems with the CRL list; proceed with the following steps to fix this and reduce "Other Time":

Turn off Automatic Root Certificates Update:

  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. Type gpedit.msc, and then click OK.
  3. If the User Account Control dialog box appears, confirm that the action it displays is what you want, and then click Continue.
  4. Under Computer Configuration > Click Administrative Templates > click System > click Internet Communication Management > click Internet Communication settings.
  5. Click Turn off Automatic Root Certificates Update > click Enabled > click OK.
  6. Close the Local Group Policy Editor.

You may have problems connecting to websites that are participating in World IPv6 Launch, and you may either fail to connect to the website or you may experience a long delay before the website begins to load. Specifically you have IPv6 connectivity to the Internet, but it is not working properly. This can be caused by a computer or a router configuring Windows with IPv6 connectivity that is unreliable. 

The Prefer IPv4 over IPv6 Fix it solution will configure your computer to prefer IPv4, instead of IPv6. By default, Windows prefers IPv6 over IPv4. If you are having problems using IPv6 to connect to some websites, this may resolve the problem.

If you want to configure your computer to prefer IPv6 again, you can use the Prefer IPv6 over IPv4 Fix It.

To use this fix, you must be logged on to the computer as a member of the Administrators group, or your user account must be granted permissions to edit the Windows registry.

 

IV. You may also need to make sure permissions are set correctly

Either run Orion Permission Checker tool or adjust permissions manually:

  1. %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\SolarWinds
    1. NETWORK SERVICE - full access
    2. Authenticated Users - full access
  2. %WINDIR%\Temp\SolarWinds
    1. NETWORK SERVICE - full access
