Random packet loss on a VMware VM hosting a polling engine

Overview

  • Packet loss randomly occurs on an Orion Platform polling engine hosted by a VMware VM.
  • Packets are dropped between the virtual switch and the guest operating system driver.
  • Other guest OS machines on the same host may show no packet loss.

Environment

  • All Orion Platform versions

Cause

  • The RX buffer ran out memory.
  • A polling engine may be using a different NIC speed than the other pollers.
