Performance reduction due to globally disabling PubSub over MessageBus

Updated Sept 14, 2016

Overview

A message displays in the notification center that there is a  minor performance reduction due to disabling Pub/Sub over MessageBus. If you check your SolarWinds logs on your Orion server, the logs have multiple RabbitMQ errors.

Environment

Any 32-bit OS or FIPS environment running on Orion Platform 2016.2 or later, which includes the following products:

  • NPM 12.0.1 or later
  • SAM 6.3 or later
  • NCM 7.5.1 or later
  • NTA 4.2.1 or later
  • Patch Manager 2.1.3 or later

Cause

This is because RabbitMQ is either not installed or is not running. FIPS may prevent RabbitMQ from running normally.

The Orion server is trying to connect with hosts using RabbitMQ. Because RabbitMQ is not available, there is a 15 second pause per process as the Orion server waits for a response before using the backup messaging protocol.

Resolution

You have two options to resolve this issue:

  • Ensure the RabbitMQ service is running and port 5671 is open.
    1. Ensure the affected machine is on (or moved to) a 64-bit version of Windows.
    2. Ensure FIPS is disabled.
    3. Ensure port 5671 (TCP) is open between the primary Orion server and all scalability engines.
    4. Run configuration wizard with the services checkbox selected.

The services restart normally and performance should improve. The notification should not return.

  • Disable RabbitMQ messaging.
    1. Go to <OrionServerName>/Orion/Admin/AdvancedConfiguration/Global.aspx
    2. On the Global tab, disable PubSubOverMessageBusEnabled.
    3. Restart all services.
    4. Dismiss any RabbitMQ warnings from the notification panel.
