NPM installer generates an Orion module error

Updated January 4, 2019

Overview

When you run the NPM installer, an Orion module displays the following error:

The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running Windows in safe mode, or if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance.

Environment

  • NPM 12
  • All Windows Server 64Bit OS

Workaround

Repair the Windows Installer Service.

This workaround is documented in this Microsoft knowledge base article (© 2016 Microsoft, available at https://www.microsoft.com/, obtained on October 25, 2016.), but the extra steps that are needed on 64-bit operating systems can be easy to miss.

  1. Open a Run box.
  2. Execute:
    cmd
  3. Run the following commands:
    %windir%\system32\msiexec.exe /unregister
    %windir%\syswow64\msiexec.exe /unregister
    %windir%\system32\msiexec.exe /regserver
    %windir%\syswow64\msiexec.exe /regserver
  4. Restart the computer.
  5. Rerun the NPM installer.
