F5® BIG-IP® load balancers (also called application delivery controllers) help ensure that mission-critical services are secure and available.

With previous versions of NPM, you could monitor your F5 devices for standard health and performance metrics. With NPM's Network Insight you can get a comprehensive picture of your load balancing environment, including F5 BIG-IP DNS (formerly Global Traffic Manager) and BIG-IP Local Traffic Manager:

  • Automatic discovery and relational mapping provide a graphical view of all the components of a single service.


  • Concurrent connection counts for all of your servers and services help you spot abnormal increases or decreases, discover what services are used most, and take action before the resources are overloaded.

  • F5 pool member health monitors provide information from your F5 about why your server is down.

  • Alerts notify you of issues with F5 services, virtual servers, and pool members.

If you’re already monitoring F5 BIG-IP load balancers, the new Network Insight features will be enabled automatically.

To see your load balancing environment, go to My Dashboards > Network > Load Balancing.


Troubleshoot a service that is down

The most common way to be notified about a problem with a service is through an email alert. In this example, you get an email alert that the service is down. Choose Alerts & Activity > Alerts to get more information about the alert.

Click the alert name to open the Alert Details page. The Other Objects resource shows that several other services are having the same problem.

In the Alert Status Overview resource, hovering over the name of the service shows that the service is down because there are no enabled pools available.

Click the name of the service to open the Service Details page for the service.

On the Service Details page, the Balancing Environment resource displays a graphical view of the components that support the service. This view confirms that all pools are down.

Hover over a pool to get more information about the problem. The pool is down because all of its child pool members are down.

To get more information about a pool member, click the group indicator to see a list of pool members.

On the Details page, if the Balancing Environment resource is not wide enough to display all pool members individually, the members are grouped and represented by a single indicator. The indicator and the number of members in the group are surrounded by a rectangle.

Hover over any pool member to display information about it. You can see  the reason for the pool member's status: Unable to connect. No successful responses received before deadline. This means that the F5 was unable to connect to the server.

Click the pool member to go to the F5 Pool Member Details page. The Health Monitor resource shows that the F5 was unable to connect to the server, but the ICMP monitor is fine. This means that the server is up, but the web service is not responding as expected.

At this point, you should log in to the server hosting and troubleshoot from there. For example, you might need to restart the web service.


If the Health Monitor resource doesn't display information about the pool, you need to specify iControl credentials. Follow the instructions displayed in the resource.

Alerts and Reports

Network Insight for F5 BIG-IP includes the following new alerts:

  • Health Monitor on F5 LTM Down
  • F5 GTM service status changed (enabled by default)
  • F5 LTM Pool goes down
  • F5 pool has less than 30% of active servers
  • Alert me when server is not up
  • Alert me when virtual IP address is not up
  • Alert me when virtual server is not up (enabled by default)
  • H/A sync status of F5 Device changed

It also includes these new F5-specific reports:

  • Average LTM Connections over Last 30 Days
  • Average Service Availability over Last 30 Days
  • Average Service Resolutions per Second over Last 30 Days
  • Average Virtual Server Availability over Last 30 Days
