Microsoft Message Queue Fills Directory with Orphaned Files

Overview

If the Microsoft Message Queue directory is filled with orphaned files, the following message or similar may be recorded in PollingController.log:

 

2012-06-21 10:41:34,917 [14] ERROR SolarWinds.Collector.PollingController.JobSchedulerEventsService - Error processing job System.Messaging.MessageQueueException: Insufficient resources to perform operation.
   at System.Messaging.MessageQueue.SendInternal(Object obj, MessageQueueTransaction internalTransaction, MessageQueueTransactionType transactionType)
   at System.Messaging.MessageQueue.Send(Object obj)
   at SolarWinds.Collector.Queue.MsmqQueueController.Send(PropertyBag bag)
   at SolarWinds.Collector.PollingController.JobSchedulerEventsService.ProcessJobResult(FinishedJobInfo jobResult)
   at SolarWinds.Collector.PollingController.JobSchedulerEventsService.OnJobFinished(FinishedJobInfo[] jobFinishedInfo)

Steps

 

To correct this issue, complete the following procedure:

  1. Log on to your SolarWinds server using an account with administrative access.
  2. Click Start > All Programs > SolarWinds Orion > Advanced Features > Orion Service Manager.
  3. Stop all SolarWinds services.
    Note: Leave the Orion Service Manager open.
  4. Click Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services.
  5. Right-click Message Queuing, and then click Stop.
    Note: Leave the Services window open.
  6. Navigate to InstallVolume:\Windows\System32\msmq\Storage\
    Note: The default installation volume is C:.
  7. Delete all files with a MQ extension (*.MQ)
    Note: There may be more than 520 files totalling 1 GB in size to be deleted from this folder.
  8. In the Services window, right-click Message Queuing, and then click Start.
  9. In the Orion Service Manager, start all SolarWinds services.
  10. Confirm that the error does not persist in PollingController.log.
