Message Center fails to work after an upgrade

When attempting to browse to the Message Center in NPM 11.5 or newer, you receive a website error similar to the following:
            Unexpected Website Error

ProvideFault failed, check fault information




NPM  version 11.5.x and NPM 12.0


The cause can either be a bug within the software or an issue where evaluations used to be installed and are no longer present.

Orion Web Logs:

2016-10-03 09:48:51,793 [67] ERROR OrionMessagesReportControl - System.ServiceModel.FaultException`1[SolarWinds.Orion.Core.Common.CoreFaultContract]:
ProvideFault failed, check fault information. (Fault Detail is equal to SolarWinds.Orion.Core.Common.CoreFaultContract(Unknown): System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException (0x80131904): Incorrect syntax near ')'.

Incorrect syntax near the keyword 'ORDER'.

Incorrect syntax near ')'.


Solution 1:

Find the data records that are causing this issue.  Use Select * from AlertStatus
In this example found some old VOIP Records that should be active and in this table, this table should be blank.
Disabling or if need deleting these alerts should resolve the Message Center errors.

Run these two queries to get rid of these bogus Alerts. (Use Orion DB manager or SQL Mgmt Studio),

UPDATE AlertDefinitions 
SET Enabled = False
Where AlertDefID =

Delete from AlertDefinitions 
Where AlertDefID = '51fba273-0ada-4b77-b20f-9cfc23d5c0c9'



Solution 2

An issue can occur where Alerts are present from old un-installed evaluations that used to be present.

  1. Open a Remote Desktop Session to the Orion Server.
  2. Navigate to {InstallPath}\Orion
  3. Open AlertManager.exe.
  4. Click Configure Alerts.
  5. Delete all Alerts that are present here for modules which you don't have (all of your configured alerts should be migrated to the new Alerting Engine so shouldn't appear here).


Solution 3 (Different Issue specific to NPM v11.5.x)

You must be running on NPM 11.5.2 and the latest Orion Platform Hotfix must be installed for that version. 

To get the latest hotfix, go to your Customer Portal > License Management > Hot Fixes > Orion Platform v2015.1.2 - Hot Fix x.Applying the hotfix resolves an issue where the Message Center does not work for non-administrator user accounts.
