Log Syslog messages to a file for archiving

Overview

This article describes how to log Syslog messages to a file for archiving. The NPM SYS Feature is not suitable for archiving large amounts of Syslog messages.

 

You can also use other Solarwinds product for Archiving purposes such As Kiwi Syslogs

Environment

All NPM versions

Steps

  1. Go to Start Menu > SolarWinds Orion > Syslogs and traps.
  2. Open the Syslog viewer go to View.
  3. Select Alerts/filter Rules.
  4. Select add new rule.
  5. Go to the Alert Actions Tab.
  6. Select Add New Action.
  7. Select Log the Message to a file and then click OK.
  8.  In Alert Log File, select where you want to store the file.
  9. Specify the file. All Syslog messages will be sent to this file.
    Note: You can set up a rule to discard the message after it has been written to the file.
  10. Select Add new rule.
  11. Go to Alert Actions Tab > add New Action.
  12. Select Discard the Syslog Message  and then click OK.
    Note: You now have two rules set up. The first will write to a file, and after the syslog has been writen to the file it will be discarded by the second rule.
