Install or uninstall Message Queuing or MSMQ on Windows Servers

Overview

This article describes how to install and uninstall Message Queuing or MSMQ on Windows Server 2008, 2012, and 2016.

Environment

  • All Orion Platform versions

  • Windows Server 2008

  • Windows Server 2012

  • Windows Server 2016

Steps

MSMQ is a messaging protocol implemented by Microsoft and deployed on Windows Servers. These procedures provide quick how-to steps for your reference. For more details, search Microsoft online help.

Install MSMQ on Windows Server 2008 or 2008 R2

  1. Go to Start > All Programs > Administrative Tools > Server Manager, and click Features.
  2. In the pane under Features Summary, click Add Features.
  3. In the resulting window, expand Message Queuing and expand Message Queuing Services.
  4. Click Directory Services Integration (for computers joined to a Domain), and click HTTP Support.
  5. Click Next, then click Install.

Uninstall MSMQ on Windows Server 2008 or 2008 R2

  1. Open the Server Manager and click Remove Features to start the wizard.
  2. Clear the MSMQ check box.
  3. Click Next, and then click Remove.
  4. When prompted, click OK to restart the server.

To install MSMQ on Windows Server 2012, 2012 R2 or 2016

  1. Open Server Manager, click Manage and select Add Roles and Features.
  2. In the Add Roles and Features Wizard, click on Next.
  3. Under Installation Type, select Role-Based or Feature-Based Installation and click Next.
  4. Under Server Selection, select a Server or a Virtual Hard Disk and then click Next.
  5. Under Features, select Message Queuing and click Next and then Install.

Uninstall MSMQ on Windows Server 2012, 2012 R2 or 2016

  1. Open Server Manager, click Manage and select Remove Roles and Features.
  2. In the Add Roles and Features Wizard, click on Next.
  3. Under Installation Type, select Role-Based or Feature-Based Installation and click Next.
  4. Under Server Selection, select a Server or a Virtual Hard Disk and click Next.
  5. Under Features, clear Message Queuing, click Next and then click Remove.
  6. When prompted, click OK to restart the server.

Install and uninstall MSMQ using Windows PowerShell in Windows 2012 or 2012 R2

To run any Server Manager related Windows PowerShell, run Windows PowerShell with elevated user rights (Run as Administrator).

  1. Load the Server Manager module into each new Windows PowerShell session. Type the following and then press Enter:
    Import-Module Servermanager
  2. At the PowerShell command prompt, enter the following command to install or uninstall Message Queuing:

    Install Command: Add-WindowsFeature MSMQ

    Uninstall Command: Remove-WindowsFeature MSMQ
