Overview

This article provides brief information on the impact of ICMP, SNMP, and WMI packet sizes and processing requirements to bandwidth usage.

Environment

  • All NPM versions
  • All SAM versions

Detail

Using 10,000 elements is roughly equal to 1Mbps of bandwidth usage.

Total Traffic per one NetObject (SNMP+ICMP, inbound+outbound):

Poll: 1 KB/poll
Statistics Poll: 1.5 KB/poll
Rediscovery: 2.7 KB/rediscovery

 

Using the default values for poll and rediscovery intervals:

Poll Interval: 120s
Statistics Poll Interval: 650s
Rediscovery Interval: 1800s

 

Total Orion Bandwidth Usage is:

1 NetObject: 45 KB/h
29,000 NetObjects: 1290943 KB/h
29,000 NetObjects: 2.8 Mbps

 

SNMP vs WMI

SolarWinds has determined that it takes roughly the same amount of resources to complete a single (1) WMI poll as it does to complete five (5) SNMP polls.
