Exporting an XLS file fails with unable to retrieve URL error

Updated July 24, 2017

Overview

This article describes an issue where NPM returns the unable to retrieve URL error when exporting an XLS file.

Environment

All NPM versions

Cause

A binding to the IP address is created when setting a binding in IIS and in the server IP address. IIS does not accept the request from other IP addresses on the server including that from the local host and from 127.0.0.1. When Orion requests the website to generate the XLS file for export, the call is made to the local host and the bindings prevent the connection resulting in an error.

Resolution

  1. Open IIS Manager on the affected server.
  2. Right-click the SolarWinds website, and then select Edit Bindings.

  1. Highlight the binding, and then select Edit.
  2. Under IP address, select All Unassigned in the drop-down menu.
