Errors or discards on a monitored node

A monitored node is displaying a high number of errors and/or discards.

All NPM versions

Inbound errors on a router interface may indicate that the issue is upstream of that device such as faulty cable, wrong configuration, and so on. On the other hand, discards may occur when the router is running out of buffer space.

  1. Run SNMP walk to gather raw SNMP data from your device.
    a. Go to: C:\Program Files(x86)\SolarWinds\Orion
    b. Run SnmpWalk.exe
    c. Change the Agent Address to the IP address of the suspect device.
    d. Change the Root OID to 1.
    e. Click Scan and set your SNMP version and community string.
  2. Save the results as a text file, zip and send this back to us for investigation.

Values returned by these OIDs:
Errors and Discards ifInDiscards
Errors and Discards ifInErrors
Errors and Discards ifOutDiscards
Errors and Discards ifOutErrors

The values that the device returns for these OIDs are the raw data that the device is reporting. If you think this data is being incorrectly reported by the device you will need to contact the device manufacturer for further assistance. You may provide them with the SNMP walk results so they can see which OIDs are reporting what information.

Some Cisco devices will inherently have a large amount of discards. You may look up Cisco Support Community for known bugs.

For more information, see the following:

For WMI Nodes you can use the following query instead from WBEMTEST:

SELECT Name, PacketsReceivedDiscarded, PacketsReceivedErrors, PacketsOutboundDiscarded, PacketsOutboundErrors FROM Win32_PerfRawData_Tcpip_NetworkInterface
