Enable audible alerts (Play a Sound action) on Windows Server 2008

Table of contents

This article provides steps on enabling audible alerts (Play a Sound action) on Windows Server 2008.

All Orion Core products on advance alerts

Note: For NPM 11.5, we recommend using the Desktop notification tool. You must download and install the client on every computer that you want to play a sound when an alert arrives. After installing the desktop notification client, configure which sound you want to play when an alert is received.

To configure a play sound action for an advanced alert on Windows Server 2008 or Windows 7:

  1. Log on to your SolarWinds server using an account with administrative privileges.
  2. Create a batch file with the following code:
    START /d "%ProgramFiles%\Windows Media Player" /min wmplayer "%windir%\media\Windows Ding.wav"
    timeout /T 3
    taskkill /F /IM wmplayer.exe
  3. Save this batch file to an appropriate location on your SolarWinds server.
  4. Configure your alert, as your monitoring needs require, and then, on the Actions tab, configure an action to execute an external program for your alert:
    1. Click Execute Program.
    2. Specify the batch file to execute, either by typing the complete path and name of the target file into the Program to execute field or by clicking Browse (…), to browse your folder structure and select the target executable.
    3. Click Time of Day, and then enter the time period when you want to execute the external program.
    4. Select the days on which you want to execute the external program.
    5. Click Alert Escalation, and then check any of the following options, as appropriate for your alert:
      • To disable the action when the alert has been acknowledged, check Do not execute this Action if the Alert has been Acknowledged.
      • To execute the action repeatedly, while the trigger condition exists, check Execute this Action repeatedly while the Alert is Triggered, and then provide an action execution interval.
      • To delay alert action execution, check Delay the execution of this Action, and then provide the interval the alert engine should wait.
    6. If you are finished configuring your external program execution action, click OK.
  5. Click Start > Server Manager.
  6. In the left pane, click expand (+) Configuration, and then click Services.
  7. In the right pane, double-click SolarWinds Alerting Engine Service.
  8. On the Log On tab, select This account, and then provide a local administrative user account and password.
  9. Click OK.
  10. Right-click SolarWinds Alerting Engine Service, and then click Restart.
