Default database retention settings for the Orion Platform

Overview

This article provides information about the default database retention settings. For information about optimizing your database, see Optimize the data you retain in the database.

SolarWinds strongly recommends that you should never touch the default Database Settings unless you are sure you need to make changes.

If you do need to change the database settings to increase the retention, please consult SolarWinds support and consider your SQL deployment environment.

 

Changing database retention settings can immediately increase the database size, create performance issues loading graphs and application such as web pages,  loading historical graphs, and statistical data, Services connection to the Orion DB, and high table fragmentation.

NPM polling settings

To access the default database and network settings, complete the following steps:

  1. Log in to your Orion Web Console with an administrator account. 
  2. Click Settings > All Settings > Polling Settings.

 

NPM polling settings are divided into the following categories:

 

POLLING INTERVALS

Setting Default setting Description
DEFAULT NODE POLL INTERVAL 120 seconds Check response time and status every configured time interval.
DEFAULT INTERFACE POLL INTERVAL  120 seconds Check response time and status every configured time interval.
DEFAULT VOLUME POLL INTERVAL  120 seconds  Check response time and status every configured time interval.
DEFAULT REDISCOVERY INTERVAL  30 minutes Default rediscovery interval.
LOCK CUSTOM VALUES  Selected  Keep custom polling and rediscovery time intervals.


POLLING STATISTICS INTERVALS

Setting Default setting Description
DEFAULT NODE TOPOLOGY POLL INTERVAL 30 minutes Collect topology data for nodes every configured time interval.
DEFAULT NODE STATISTICS POLL INTERVAL 10 minutes Collect statistics for nodes every configured time interval.
DEFAULT INTERFACE STATISTICS POLL INTERVAL 9 minutes  Collect statistics for interfaces every configured time interval.
DEFAULT VOLUME STATISTICS POLL INTERVAL  15 minutes Collect statistics for volumes every configured time interval.
INTERFACE DATA OBSOLETE AFTER .... ... POLLS Three count If interface data is not changed in the specified number of polls, it is considered obsolete. Interface resources then display a warning that the data might not be up-to-date. You can switch this feature on/off by checking/unchecking the checkbox.

INDEX DEFRAGMENTATION

Selected

Select to enable database index defragmentation.
TIMEOUT FOR INDEX DEFRAGMENTATION 3600seconds Timeout for index defragmentation.
ENABLE / DISABLE AUTO RESET LOGGING LEVELS TO DEFAULTS Selected Select if you want logging levels to be automatically reset to defaults during Maintenance.
AUDITING TRAILS RETENTION 365 days  Auditing Trails statistics will be deleted from the database after configured days. These are user actions
DETAILED STATISTICS RETENTION 7 days  Detailed statistics will be summarized into hourly statistics after configured days.
HOURLY STATISTICS RETENTION 30 days Hourly statistics will be summarized into daily statistics after configured days.
DAILY STATISTICS RETENTION 365 days Daily statistics will be deleted from the database after configured days.  
CONTAINER DETAILED STATISTICS RETENTION  7 days Detailed Container statistics will be summarized into hourly statistics after configured days.
CONTAINER HOURLY STATISTICS RETENTION  30 days  Hourly Container statistics will be summarized into daily statistics after configured days.
CONTAINER DAILY STATISTICS RETENTION 365 days Daily Container statistics will be deleted from the database after configured days.
BASELINE DATA COLLECTION DURATION 7 days  Specify how many days of data to include in the baseline.
INTERFACE BASELINE CALCULATION FREQUENCY Only on Sunday NPM can run Interface Baseline Calculation every day or once per week. 
DETAILED INTERFACE AVAILABILITY STATISTICS RETENTION 7 days Detailed interface availability statistics will be summarized into hourly statistics after configured days.
HOURLY INTERFACE AVAILABILITY STATISTICS RETENTION  30 days Hourly interface availability statistics will be summarized into daily statistics after configured days.
DAILY INTERFACE AVAILABILITY STATISTICS RETENTION  365 days  Daily interface availability statistics will be deleted from the database after configured days.
DELETE STALE INTERFACES Not selected Select to delete an interface if no new data is polled for the interface for the time specified in Stale Interface Retention and the Orion Platform cannot remap the interface.
STALE INTERFACE RETENTION 7 days Specify the time interval after which interfaces are considered to be stale and are thus removed from the database.
DETAILED WIRELESS STATISTICS RETENTION  3 days Detailed wireless statistics will be summarized into hourly statistics after configured days.
HOURLY WIRELESS STATISTICS RETENTION  14 days Hourly wireless statistics will be summarized into daily statistics after configured days.
DAILY WIRELESS STATISTICS RETENTION 180 days Daily wireless statistics will be deleted from the database after configured days.
DETAILED UNDP STATISTICS RETENTION 3 days Detailed UnDP statistics will be summarized into hourly statistics after configured days.
HOURLY UNDP STATISTICS RETENTION 14 days   Hourly UnDP statistics will be summarized into daily statistics after configured days.
DAILY UNDP STATISTICS RETENTION 180 days  Daily UnDP statistics will be deleted from the database after configured days.
EVENTS RETENTION  30 days Network events will be deleted from the database after configured days.
SYSLOG MESSAGES RETENTION 7 days Syslog messages will be deleted from the database after configured days.
TRAP MESSAGES RETENTION  7 days  Trap messages will be deleted from the database after configured days.
MAX ALERT EXECUTION TIME 60 seconds If the alert execution process takes more than this value it will be disabled.
ALERT ACKNOWLEDGE URL TEXT Click here to acknowledge this alert Text to display alert acknowledge link.
ALLOW ALERT ACTIONS FOR UNMANAGED OBJECTS Not selected  Alerting Engine will execute actions for network objects in an unmanaged state.
DISCOVERY RETENTION 60 days Discovery profiles will be deleted from the database after configured days.
DOWNTIME HISTORY RETENTION  7 days

Downtime History will be deleted from the database after configured days.

 

NETWORK

SETTING DEFAULT SETTING DESCRIPTION
ICMP TIMEOUT 2500 ms Maximum time to wait for ICMP (ping) replies.
ICMP DATA SolarWinds Status Query Text sent in ping.
SNMP TIMEOUT  2500 ms Maximum time to wait for SNMP response.
SNMP RETRIES 2 count Maximum count to retry SNMP attempts.
UCS API TIMEOUT 240 seconds  Maximum time to wait for UCS manager response.
PERFORM REVERSE DNS LOOKUP  (Selected) SolarWinds will perform a reverse DNS lookup to determine the name of any node with a static IP address.
ENABLE DOWNTIME MONITORING   (Selected) Enable Downtime Monitoring data collection

 

CALCULATIONS & THRESHOLDS

SETTING DEFAULT SETTING DESCRIPTION
AVAILABILITY CALCULATION (ADVANCED)  (Node Status) Node status is recommended. Availability is based on the up or down status of the node.
BASELINE CALCULATION (ADVANCED)  (Selected)  Throttle traffic to routers for initial baseline calculation.
ENABLE AUTO DEPENDENCIES  (Not selected)  Enable Periodical Auto Dependency Calculation
ALLOW SECURE DATA ON WEB (ADVANCED) (Not selected)  Allow SNMP community strings to be visible in the Orion Web Console.
NODE WARNING LEVEL 120 seconds Mark devices as down that has not responded for configured time.
COUNTER ROLLOVER (Method 1)  This method assumes the counter hit the maximum value and rolled over.
DEFAULT ASSIGNED IP ADDRESS (Blank) Default IP address assigned to monitored nodes if DNS resolution fails.
DISABLE HTML ENCODING FOR POLLED DATA (Not selected) Do not HTML encode polled data (less secure)

 

HARDWARE HEALTH POLLING

SETTING DEFAULT SETTING DESCRIPTION
DEFAULT STATISTICS POLL INTERVAL 10 minutes Collect statistics for Hardware Health every configured time interval.
DETAILED STATISTICS RETENTION  7 days Detailed Hardware Health statistics will be summarized into hourly statistics after configured days.
HOURLY STATISTICS RETENTION 30 days Hourly Hardware Health statistics will be summarized into daily statistics after configured days.
DAILY STATISTICS RETENTION 365 days Daily Hardware Health statistics will be deleted from the database after configured days.
PREFERRED CISCO MIB (CISCO-ENTITY-SENSOR-MIB) Specify the preferred MIB which is probed first for hardware sensors. Applies only on SNMP Cisco hardware health poller.

 

MULTICAST POLLING

SETTING DEFAULT SETTING DESCRIPTION
DEFAULT ROUTE TABLE POLL INTERVAL 10 minutes Collect statistics for Multicast Route Table every configured time interval.

 

ROUTING POLLING

SETTING DEFAULT SETTING DESCRIPTION

DEFAULT ROUTING TABLE POLL INTERVAL  180 minutes Update Routing Table every configured time interval.

WIRELESS

THE REVERSE DNS TIMEOUT  0 seconds To see hostnames of clients connected to wireless access points, provide a timeout for translating IP addresses. To disable translating IP addresses to hostnames, enter 0.

MAP GENERATION START TIME 12:45 AM The time of day to run wireless heat map generation process.

Collect wireless client signal strength data for controllers every configured time interval.

This document appears to be out of date.  There are Polling settings in our 12.0.1 installation that are not included in this document.
