The following error appears when configuring the database while running the NPM Configuration Wizard:

Could not load file or assembly 'Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo version xxxxxxx'


Another/Full possible error:

ERROR SceneContainer - SceneContainer:bntNext_Click: System.IO.FileNotFoundException: Could not load file or assembly 'Microsoft.SqlServer.ConnectionInfo, Version=, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=89845dcd8080cc91' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified.
File name: 'Microsoft.SqlServer.ConnectionInfo, Version=, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=89845dcd8080cc91'

This occurs when there are missing components because the SQL Management Object version is incorrect.


Problem: (Sql server 2012) This issue happens when assembly version not found by visual studio.


Install the required SQL Shared Management Object version. Refer to Installing SMO.

And wait for polling results.


If you are on sql server 2012:

Go to and download:

  • ENU\x64\SharedManagementObjects.msi for X64 OS or
  • ENU\x86\SharedManagementObjects.msi for X86 OS,

Once installed run configuration wizard and verify it completes successfully.
