Configuration Wizard blocked by database errors

Overview

If you installed a SQL Server database on the Orion server and subsequently removed it, some Orion modules (Information Services, Collector Services, Job Engine v1 and v2) continue to track dependency on the local SQL Server. As a result, after uninstalling the local SQL Server, when you attempt to run the Configuration Wizard, this ConfigurationWizard.log error appears:

System.InvalidOperationException: Service MSSQL$ was not found on computer '.'. ---> System.ComponentModel.Win32Exception: The specified service does not exist as an installed service

Environment

All Orion products

Cause

This situation most commonly occurs if you install the SQL Server Express during evaluation of Orion software but deleted SQL Server. For example, in the processing to converting the server into a production Orion server aimed at a remote SQL Server database.

Resolution

  1. Remove Information Services, Collector Services and Job Engine v1 and v2 by going to Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs.
  2. Reinstall the Information Services, Collector Services, and Job Engine v1 and v2.
    1. Navigate to the installers Defaults: Server 2003, C:\\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Solarwinds\Installers; Server 2008, C:\ProgramData\Solarwinds\Installers.

    2. Run the installer (select typical) for Information Services, Collector Services and Job Engine v1 and v2.
  3. Run the Configuration Wizard
  4. Select Services
  5. Click Next.
