Configuration Wizard Error: The semaphore timeout period has expired

Updated July 17, 2018

When you execute the Configuration Wizard, the process fails with the following message:

Database configuration failed:  Error while executing script- A transport-level error has occurred when receiving results from the server. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - The semaphore timeout period has expired.)

  • All versions of NPM or SAM

  • The work to configure the database did not complete in the requested time.
  • NIC card is having problems with its drivers
  • Corrupted SQL installation on the SQL server

Resolution 1:

  • Increase the SQL Database connection timeout, as described in the following KB article.

Note: A connection timeout of 1200 (10 minutes) is a bit excessive.  60 seconds (1 minute) is usually sufficient.

Resolution 2:

  • Microsoft article regarding the issue for advanced network adapter troubleshooting (available at, obtained February 11, 2019)

Resolution 3:

  • As part of the isolation process, try creating a new DB instance on the same SQL server and it still failed this means that there is a need to focus on the performance of the main SQL server
