CPU usage reaches 100 percent during website optimization stage

Updated June 19, 2017

Overview

When running the SolarWinds Orion configuration wizard to address a Web Console access issue, the CPU usage switches between 0-100% utilization quickly and website optimization fails after approximately 30 minutes. The system becomes unresponsive when accessing the Web Console and displays an unexpected website error after login.

SolarWinds services run normally after the Alerting service is restarted but the Orion server is not available for troubleshooting.

Environment

  • NPM 12.0
  • STM 6.3
  • NCM 7.4.1
  • Windows Server 2008 R2
  • VMware is a hypervisor
  • No antivirus program

Cause

This issue can occur when there is a lack of read/write permissions on the IIS and .NET folders used by the Orion website and the .NET cache.

Resolution

  1. Stop and disable all Orion services from services.msc.
  2. Reboot the server.
  3. Run the Permission Checker Tool and do a repair.
  4. Rerun the tool to verify that there are no permission problems.
  5. Stop the IIS service.
  6. Clear the .NET cache.
  7. Clean the c:\windows\temp folder (except the SolarWinds folder).
  8. Run C:\Program Files (x86)\SolarWinds\Orion> .\ConfigurationWizard.exe /repair and select all three options.
  9. When the configuration wizard completes, enable all the Orion and IIS services.
