Issue

SolarWinds does not recommend running a QoE packet analysis sensor in a single-core environment.

SolarWinds conducted testing to measure the performance effect of a packet analysis sensor running on a heavily loaded single-core machine with Web server (IIS) in an effort to determine how a packet analysis sensor may affect the performance of IIS and vice-versa. The testing showed that the sensor negatively influenced overall performance of the web server, but that, even when the CPU utilization of the machine was around 100%, packet loss was not detected on the QoE sensor (i.e. QoE performance was not negatively affected).

Recommendation

SolarWinds does not recommend running a QoE packet analysis sensor in a single-core environment.

Though no significant stability issue was detected, there is a risk that, over a longer period of time, with a variable (real) data load, some unexpected stability/performance problems may arise. Therefore, SolarWinds considers it likely that, over time, running the packet analysis sensor on an application server with a single-core machine will negatively influence the overall performance and stability.
